Science of Sound Workshop

February 13, 2013

On Saturday, February 23, MUST will present a workshop on The Science of Sound... with Resonator Tubes in collaboration with SLANT and Mission Science Workshop. The workshop will teach SFUSD teachers to build instruments and write compositions. The teachers can then use these skills to teach their students and bring music into the science classroom.

Head Start Pilot

This spring, Music in Schools Today piloted a music integration collaboration with Head Start in Oakland, offering music classes to two pre-K Head Start classes. The pilot was a great success, and we're looking forward to expanding the program in the fall. Here's a short video with more information about the class:

ALO's Tour d'Amour VI

Bay Area jam/rock favorites ALO wrap up their 6th Annual Tour d'Amour at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in SF on Saturday, February 25th. Their shows across California this month have been a benefit for Music in Schools Today, an organization the band loves to support crediting their early encouragement in music to quality music education programs. Science of Sound Playshop

On March 3rd, 2012, Music in Schools Today, in collaboration with SFUSD, is presenting a workshop/playshop for K-8 teachers that will combine the physics of sound with music, including teaching how to make instruments that demonstrate scientific principles. This is part of our new program, Teaching Through Music (TEAM), which offers professional development to integrate music and science. If you're interested in attending, please register here.

Hillside Elementary completes successful semester.

The fall semester at Hillside ended with a great culminating event this week. The Guitar, Choir, Musical Theatre, and Drumming classes put on a fun show for the school and their families. In addition, the Visual Arts class presented a video slideshow of the work the first and second graders had done in the last few months, including examples of play-doh stop-motion animation!

The fourth annual Silicon Valley Rocks! was a huge success. The crowd danced away as all our bands rocked hard, and we raised over $15,000 for MUST programs!

KC Turner Presents an all-day music extravanganza at Bazaar Cafe in San Francisco's Richmond district on Saturday, October 8, 2011.

Come out and support your independent SF artists at a locally-owned business. KC Turner Presents has a consistent San Francisco history of bringing in the cream of the crop. Bazaar Cafe is a great place that has given many musicians a chance to put themselves out there and this event is all about giving back. 36 musicians will play in sets from 10am to 10pm. There will be great specials on delicious food and beverages!

Music for your ears all day long- FOR FREE. To top it off, there will be a tip jar passed w/ 100% of proceeds going to support Music In Schools Today.

Back to School Instrument Drive

It's back to school time at Music in Schools Today! Programs are starting up at various schools in the Bay Area, and at many others, instrumental music classes are also beginning. Help those students and schools that need instruments to use and practice! If you have a gently-used instrument sitting in your closet, consider donating it to Music in Schools Today through our Adopt an Instrument program! You'll be helping out a student learn to play music.

Town and Country Village 4th Annual July Music Fest

This July, Town and Country Village is holding its 4th annual July Music Fest, every Wednesday in July from 6-8pm in Palo Alto! Come enjoy free concerts under the Oak trees! Artists include The Jules Broussard Band, Top Shelf's Tribute to Motown, Swing Fever, and Double Take. In addition, Town and Country Village will be collecting gently used instruments for Music in Schools Today's Adopt an Instrument program every Wednesday, so go check it out!

Coming up! On Sunday, May 1, 2011, the Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center in Berkeley is hosting a benefit for Music in Schools Today! Members of pioneering hip-hop collective Hieroglyphics (Opio and Pep Love) and rising hip-hop/reggae/dancehall duo Los Rakas headline a fast-paced show that includes three student acts from three different Bay Area high schools (Head-Royce, Athenian, and College Prep), plus a rap trio.
